The boys basketball team from St. Dominic High started fast and finished strong Monday night.

Playing host to Winfield, the Crusaders improved to 6-14 on the season, beating the Warriors 68-49.

St. Dominic led 22-11 after one quarter and stretched the lead to 36-17 by halftime.

Winfield (1-16) outscored St. Dominic 11-7 in the third quarter, but the Crusaders bounced back with a 25-21 fourth quarter to preserve the victory.

The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for St. Dominic, which last won Jan. 7 at Wright City.

The Crusaders featured a balanced scoring attack Monday, getting 14 points from senior Ed Walch and 10 apiece from juniors Chad Giesmann and Chris Meers. Ten St. Dominic players managed to score at least four points in the contest.

The Crusaders are scheduled to return to action tonight, playing host to St. Charles West, the second-ranked school in the Post-Dispatch large school poll.

In another boys game Monday:

Duchesne 64, Whitfield 50 - Brett Bredensteiner scored 25 points and fellow senior Aaron Wilson added 23 as the host Pioneers eased past Whitfield.

Duchesne, ranked eighth among area small schools, improved to 14-5. Whitfield is 5-14.

Duchesne won on the strength of a big second half. Down 26-24 at halftime, the Pioneers outscored Whitfield 40-24 after the break.

Senior Jeff Rauscher chipped in 10 points for Duchesne, which is scheduled to play tonight at Fort Zumwalt North.

Jared Johnson had 31 points and six assists for Whitfield.

In area girls games Monday:

St. Charles 46, Pattonville 39 - In a battle of Pirates, the visitors pulled one out.

St. Charles improved to 8-11 while Pattonville slipped to 5-14.

St. Charles, which led 21-19, outscored the home team 25-20 in the second half for the win.

Julie Williams (16 points), Katie Panhorst (14 points) and Mary Rau (10 points) had big scoring games for St. …
