Doctors' Average Income Was $177,400 in 1992

The average income of the nation's physicians rose to $177,400 in 1992, up 4 percent from the year before, the American Medical Association reports.

Such incomes are apparently helping make careers in medicine more desirable than ever, despite doctors' anxieties about how they would fare under health-care reform.

The average income figures are compiled annually by the AMA based on a telephone survey of more than 4,100 physicians. The incomes ranged from a low of $111,800 for general practitioners and family practice doctors to a high of $253,300 for radiologists.

Physicians' median income was $148,000 in 1992, or 6.5 percent more than a year before. Half the physicians earned more than that and half earned less.

The average is pulled higher than the median by the earnings of the highest paid surgeons, anesthesiologists and other specialists at the top end of the scale.
