Report: Tci Eyes Crown Cable Would Take over Subscribers Here

Tele-Communications Inc., a big player in the St. Louis cable TV market, is looking to take over competitor Crown Cable's subscribers here, a trade publication said Monday.

Multichannel News said that TCI, the nation's largest cable TV operator, would like to acquire Crown Cable's 117,000 cable subscribers in the St. Louis area. TCI, based in Englewood, Colo., already has more than 130,000 subscribers here.

Officials of TCI and Crown could not be reached for comment. But an industry analyst said it is logical that TCI would want to buy a piece of Crown, a subsidiary of Kansas City-based Hallmark Cards Inc.

Michael Kupinski, an analyst with A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc., said the fusion of cable and telephone companies has forced both to buy, sell and swap properties. Several big mergers are under way, with cable companies looking to offer telephone service and telephone companies preparing to offer movies and other services.
