Howard Ties NCAA Mark as Smsu Wins

Melody Howard equaled a National Collegiate Athletic Association record by hitting 11 3-point shots as Southwest Missouri State beat Drake 79-57 Saturday in a Missouri Valley Conference game.

The record was set last month by Danielle Viglione of Texas against Houston.

Howard, a 5-foot-9 senior guard from Marshfield, Mo., also broke the school career and single-game scoring records on the same 3-point shot late in the game.

"Before the game I felt like I had a lot of range," Howard said. "I got a little nervous late in the game, but I was pumped."

Despite sitting out 10 minutes, she finished with 41 points, breaking Southwest Missouri's single-game record of 37 set in 1975 by Cindy Henderson against Claremore junior college.

Howard hit 14 of 21 shots from the field, including 11 of 17 on 3-point tries.

Howard has 1,774 career points, surpassing the 1,769 points scored by Jeanette Tendai from 1982-86.

Howard averages a team-high 18.3 points a game for SMSU (17-5 overall, 12-1 in the MVC). …
