Dear Dr. Fox: I have a gorgeous white cat that I adore, but to my sorrow, the fur on Mindy's belly and neck is losing its whiteness and becoming yellow or brownish. What could be causing this?

Unfortunately, cats that are all white or have white areas on their bodies may begin to change to the colors you mention from eating the artificial coloring that is put into some pet foods.

My suggestion is to shop around until you find a brand that is free of dye - they do exist.

Your other alternative is to make up your own balanced diet for her.

But not to worry - as Mindy's old fur is shed, the new fur will grow in white.
