As Temporary Coach, Murphy Will `Share Ideas' with Card Outfielders

The Cardinals already have one No. 3 in camp, outfielder Brian Jordan, who makes his home in Atlanta. On Sunday, another No. 3 - a more prominent Atlanta citizen - will arrive.

Dale Murphy, twice the National League's Most Valuable Player, will be in town for the first of two stints as an instructor for the Cardinals' outfielders. Murphy retired last season from the Colorado Rockies after spending most of his career with the Atlanta Braves.

In 1982-84, Murphy played for Cardinals manager Joe Torre in Atlanta, and it was Torre who initiated the talks with Murphy late last season.

"There really hasn't been an opportunity like this," Murphy said. "I talked to the Braves off and on, but nothing really specific. They always kind of left the door open, like if you're interested, come in and talk to us."

Murphy is doing promotional work for the Braves, but the Cardinals were the first to offer an on-field position. While he cannot be here for six weeks in succession because of other commitments, Murphy seized it.

"I don't want to go just to work on my tan, which needs a lot of work," Murphy said. Torre said Murphy "looks like he's been in a closet all his life."

Murphy said, "I also don't need to work on my golf game, which needs more work than my tan.

"Maybe I can share some ideas. The Cardinals have a great bunch of athletes in the outfield, and maybe I can give them something to think about."

Murphy will assist coach Jose Cardenal in working with the outfielders but there is no position scheduled for him after spring training, which is just fine with Murphy.

"When Joe asked me, I was real hesitant because of the commitment," Murphy said. "He said he wasn't looking for a full-time coach, and he was not offering a job as a full-time coach. He had an idea in mind." t

Torre said Murphy would contribute "because he's a guy who most recently played the game. …
