San Diego pitcher Andy Benes had his right knee examined by a team physician Sunday, and indications are that the swelling in the joint won't affect his spring workout schedule in Peoria, Ariz.

Benes said he's feeling no pain, but the Padres' training staff was unable to determine the cause of the swelling.

Dr. Jan Fronek studied results of a magnetic resonance imaging scan performed Saturday and said Benes can continue his regular workouts.

"I would classify it as wear and tear in that area, and it should have no effect on his pitching," Fronek said.

Shortstop Kevin Elster, a non-roster invitee, worked out Sunday after being sidelined because of a hip injury.

Orioles: Baltimore manager Johnny Oates said Brady Anderson will shift from left field to center and Mike Devereaux will move from center to right. As a result, rookie Jeffrey Hammonds will play left.

"I think Brady can play center as well as `Devo,' but I don't think `Devo' can play left as well as Brady," Oates said in Sarasota, Fla. …
