ILLINOIS EAST ST. LOUIS Suspect Pleads Guilty In Auto Insurance Scam

Gary J. McCormack, 44, has pleaded guilty of mail fraud in a scheme to defraud insurance companies through false reports of auto theft, the U.S. attorney for Southern Illinois said Wednesday.

Authorities said McCormack had reported the thefts of a 1959 Corvette in Evanston, Ill., a 1970 Mercedes in Phoenix and a 1971 Mercedes in Dallas but never had owned any of those cars.

U.S. Postal Inspector Dana Kimbrough of St. Louis said McCormack had used a complicated scheme to get titles to cars he never owned, and then waited sometimes a year or two to report them stolen.
