Henry Louis Wallace was as popular in his working-class community in east Charlotte as the 10 women he is accused of strangling.

Neighbors said he was charming and attractive, he usually had a job and he counted dozens of women as friends and girlfriends.

But behind that facade, police say, he was a crack addict who hid a criminal life that included drugs, burglary convictions, a rape charge. At the time of some of the killings, he was on probation.

Wallace was arrested this weekend and charged with 10 counts of murder. He faces a bond hearing today.

The charges stunned people who knew the victims - and those who knew Wallace, 28.

One victim, Shawna Hawk, 20, was found strangled in her bathtub. She was Wallace's friend, and he once was her boss at a fast-food restaurant.

Months after her death, Wallace told Hawk's mother, Dee Sumpter, that he was sorry she had been killed and gave her a comforting hug.

Now, Wallace is charged with strangling Hawk.

"I'm feeling numb, and I'm in an emotional stupor," Sumpter said after learning of the charges. …
