Bobo Beats Buzzer in Ot, Lifts Vashon over St. Charles W

Article excerpt

It wasn't that the St. Charles West Warriors didn't have the oomph to finish the wobbly Wolverines of Vashon High in the Missouri Class 4A high school basketball semifinals Friday.

It wasn't that West didn't have the Final Four experience of its opponent, which was appearing in its 12th state-championship series.

West had all-state guard Ryan Robertson and, ostensibly, that was enough. Robertson scored a game-high 33 points, 22 in the second half.

But Vashon's 6-foot-8 Antonio Bobo scored 25 points, including a turnaround jumper from 12 feet at the buzzer in overtime to beat St. Charles West 79-77.

Vashon (26-2) advanced to today's championship game, in which its opponent will be Hazelwood Central (27-2), a 64-47 winner over Kansas City Central in the other semifinal.

St. Charles West (25-5) will play in the third-place game against KC Central (26-3) at 10 a.m.

"I guess if we have to win it, the best way to go out is with the ball in his hands," coach Floyd Irons said of Bobo, an Oklahoma recruit.

Vashon almost dropped the ball after squandering a 13-point lead in the first half. St. Charles West, behind Robertson and Blake Hollander, who scored 21 points, rallied to tie Vashon 66-66 with 2 minutes 32 seconds remaining in regulation.

Jim Shemwell sank two free throws to pull West even, and a tenacious Warriors' press staggered Vashon. Robertson nearly deep-sixed the Wolverines, scoring seven of his team's remaining nine points in regulation, including the front end of a one-and-one free throw that gave the Warriors a 75-72 lead with 38 seconds to go.

Tentatively, Vashon came down, put the ball in the hands of junior guard Ernest Askew, who nailed a 3-pointer with 22 seconds remaining.

Earlier, Askew had been yanked by Irons for failing to execute a play at the close of the first half. The failure enabled West to pull to 42-33 on a Hollander 3-pointer. …
