Warfield Regains Chairmanship of Democrats

Mac Warfield of Granite City took the reins of the Democratic Party in Madison County again Monday night with a promise to keep the party united and recapture the one county office held by a Republican.

Warfield served two-year terms as chairman in 1984 and 1986. The precinct committeemen elected him by acclamation at the party's county convention in Edwardsville. He succeeds Mayor John Bellcoff of Madison, who retired after two terms.

An expected race for the chairmanship with County Board member Robert Stille of Edwardsville did not materialize. Stille did not attend the convention and could not be reached for comment.

In the Madison County Republican Party convention Monday night, Chairman Edward Ragsdale won re-election without opposition. Ron Jedda of Collinsville was elected first vice chairman.

The only race for party chairmanships in the area developed in the St. Clair County Republican Party, where Chairwoman Sharon Mehrtens of Millstadt won re-election, despite a challenge by Rocky Stookey of Belleville. …
