Magnetic Field Research Examines Link to Cancer

Article excerpt

Utility workers with heightened exposure to magnetic fields had three times the risk of one kind of leukemia than those with less exposure, a study has found.

Some previous studies have found similar results, but one expert called the new work one of the best studies of the subject so far. The study's authors, however, cautioned that the result does not show that the magnetic fields caused the leukemia.

The study examined records of more than 220,000 men over a 20-year period. It found an association with acute myeloid leukemia and weaker evidence for an association with a brain cancer called astrocytoma.

The lead author was Dr. Gilles Theriault of McGill University in Montreal. He said in a statement last week: "Our study does not provide a final answer to the question" of whether electromagnetic fields are linked to cancer.

"It also indicates that the number of workers who may have been affected by the problem is very small, estimated at one in 200,000 workers," he said. …
