Cal's Leading Scorer Heads To NBA Draft

Forward Lamond Murray, who became the University of California's career scoring leader in three seasons, says he will pass up his final year of eligibility and enter the National Basketball Association draft pool. Murray joins teammate Jason Kidd in leaving Cal early. Kidd, a sophomore All-America point guard, announced last month he will be part of the June 29 draft.

Murray, often at the receiving end of Kidd's passes, scored 1,688 points in his three years at Cal to surpass the previous school mark of 1,655, established in 1987 by Kevin Johnson, who plays for the Phoenix Suns.

***** BASKETBALL Former Buckeye Anderson Dies At 27

John Anderson, who played on Ohio State's National Invitational Tournament championship team in 1986, died Sunday (April 10, 1994) in Newcastle, Australia, from fungal meningitis. He was 27 and had been playing professionally in Australia. Fungal meningitis is rare in the United States but more common in Australia. Tests showed Mr. Anderson was developing large blood clots in the brain and spinal cord.

***** FOOTBALL Tepper Asks Howard To Boycott Playboy

University of Illinois coach Lou Tepper is urging linebacker Dana Howard to skip a photo session next month with other members of Playboy magazine's All-America football team. "I told Dana that if he boycotts that event, he'd still be an All-American and he'd have a lot more women respect him," Tepper said. "Personally, I feel Playboy magazine is an affront to women. But my values differ from others."

Howard, from East St. Louis, could not be reached for comment but is expected to be in Phoenix to pose with other team members. "I'll leave Dana's attendance up to him," Tepper said.

The Cincinnati Bengals re-signed Tim McGee and Reggie Rembert to strengthen their thin receiving corps. …
