David L. Gardner, a retired executive at Laclede Gas Co. and a longtime civic leader in St. Louis, died Thursday (April 14, 1994) at his home in Town and Country after a brief illness. He was 68.

Mr. Gardner was vice president and secretary-treasurer of Laclede for many years before he retired in 1990. He joined the company 1949 as an engineer.

He was born and reared in St. Louis. He attended St. Louis Country Day School and graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., and from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He served in the Navy in mid-1940s and in the Korean War.

He was a board member of the Arts and Education Council, the Municipal Opera Association and the Auto Club of Missouri.

He was a past chairman and former board member of the Bi-State Chapter of the American Red Cross, a past president of the Cardinal Ritter Institute and the Missouri Amateur Ice Hockey Association.
