JUST TWO MONTHS ago we were inspired by the first "green" Winter Olympics. Young Norwegian mascots Hakon and Kristin were an example to children everywhere to keep our planet beautiful and clean. The commitment of the Lillehammer Olympic Organizing Committee to be environmentally conscious in preparation of the Winter Olympics is a challenge to all of us, even as we make simple decisions day in and day out.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes steps that were taken to support the "green" Olympics in Lillehammer, along with suggestions for following suit in your own home.

1. Snacks and sandwiches were served on plates made of potato-based starch, which could then be fed to livestock.

What you can do: Use reusable plastic plates and cups at your next picnic instead of paper or foam disposables.

Pack your school lunch in a reusable container instead of throwaway paper bags and take a thermos for your beverage.

2. Mass transportation vehicles were encouraged and cars weren't allowed in some areas. …
