The NBC jury is in: After eight seasons, "L.A. Law" has been canceled. NBC Entertainment president WARREN LITTLEFIELD called the drama "a cornerstone of our Thursday night" and "an integral part of the NBC family that we will surely miss," but nevertheless said Tuesday that the plug will be pulled with a series finale on May 19.

Since its debut on Sept. 15, 1986, "L.A. Law" has won 15 Emmies. Ratings slipped in the last two seasons, although they improved somewhat this year.

BILL CLINTON'S mom let her jaw drop when her son brought home the young HILLARY RODHAM.

In her posthumously released autobiography, "Leading With My Heart," VIRGINIA CLINTON writes that when her daughter-in-law-to-be walked in, "I didn't know what to think. . . . No makeup. Coke-bottle glasses. Brown hair with no apparent style. Even though (my husband) Roger and I were polite, I guess our expressions gave us away. Because the minute she went upstairs to unpack her bag, Bill gave us a withering look."

He scolded: "Look, I want you to know that I've had it up to here with beauty queens. I have to have somebody I can talk with."

Sturm und drang: "I now realize that I have been a classic battered and abused wife," says ROSEANNE ARNOLD, 41. In her petition for a divorce from TOM ARNOLD, 35, she says he "struck me, has thrown objects at me, pinched me and verbally abused me. He also has pushed me against walls, while he screams."
