People who want to go from one part of downtown Clayton to another during their lunch hour or at morning and evening rush hours can get a free ride starting April 25.

For the lunch crowd, Clayton will launch a shuttle from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays that will run between Ritz-Carlton Hotel and the Jefferson Smurfit Center at Forsyth and Maryland avenues. A van will arrive every 12 to 14 minutes at each of a dozen stops on the route.

To help ease congestion during construction of the new jail, 200 long-term parking spaces will become available on April 25 at the Ritz-Carlton garage. Beginning that day, Clayton and St. Louis County will offer a free shuttle service between 7 and 9 a.m. and 4 and 6 p.m. weekdays between the hotel and the government center.

The garage is on Carondelet Avenue east of Hanley Road. A space would cost $2 a day, officials said. Spaces first would be offered to people losing parking because the county is building a new jail, officials said. …
