Food for Thought: It's hard enough for the Chicago Cubs to swallow losses in their first eight games at Wrigley Field.

Now they have found that there's no free lunch.

On the last day of spring training, general manager LARRY HIMES told his Cubbies that the club would no longer spring for lunch spreads in the clubhouse.

When asked about that the other day, Himes considered the topic less than appetizing. He said the club had blown $20,000 in each of the last two years on lunch meat and other delicacies. No other team that he knows of continues to treat its millionaires to free chow.

"My secretary pays for her lunch," Himes said. "I pay for my lunch. They should pay for theirs."

Big-league players often are ripped for being self-absorbed ingrates with no sense of history.

Don't paint DELINO DeSHIELDS of the Los Angeles Dodgers with that brush.

For two years, he sported a short-pant-leg, long-socks look that became his trademark. He did it out of respect for the old uniforms of the Negro League.

This spring, he went with the current baseball craze, short socks and long pants. It provided more comfort to a circulation problem he had below his knees.

After fielding complaints from his family, DeShields is back to his distinctive style.

"I didn't know how important it was to other people," he said. "I went home and everybody was upset about it. I figure I started something, I might as well finish it."

He hasn't heard directly from ex-Negro Leaguers.

"But I've heard through others they appreciate it," DeShields said. "There's some history behind it."

And Blues fans thought they had playoff problems. Where would their heroes be without CURTIS JOSEPH in goal?
