Dear Heloise: I always used an air freshener in my vacuum cleaner to make a pleasant aroma in the rooms, especially in the winter time when the windows aren't opened as much.

All of a sudden, I can't find these fresheners in any store and I've been looking for a month. Can you tell me what I can use in place of them?

You can make your own scented carpet freshener that will then make the bag smell nice. It's easy!

Fill a shaker three-quarters full of baking soda and add cinnamon, powdered cloves or other spices, whatever you prefer. Shake evenly over the carpet, wait a while and vacuum. Every time the vacuum cleaner is used, it will freshen the air until the bag is replaced.

If there is any baking soda mixture left over, place a piece of plastic wrap between the lid and shaker to preserve the smell of the freshener.
