Gac Champion Knights Aim for 1st District Title

Article excerpt

The recent Gateway Athletic Conference track and field meet was just the beginning of an exciting month of competition.

The road to the state meet in Jefferson City begins Saturday at the various district meets around the area.

The main St. Charles area meet will be the Class 4A District 3 meet at Fort Zumwalt South. Competition begins at 11 a.m. with the top four finishers in each event qualifying for next week's sectional meet.

Francis Howell North won its third consective GAC title last week, but the Knights are looking for their first district title. They have come close the past two years, but have finished second.

"It should be an interesting meet," Howell North coach Mike Mills said. "It would be nice to win the meet, but the most important thing is to qualify our athletes for the sectionals."

Parkway Central comes in as one of the top teams in the district. The Colts used their overall balance to take the district title a year ago. Parkway Central has another strong unit led by hurdler Scott Tate and middle distance standout Lerone Martin.

"Parkway Central looks pretty tough again this year," Mills said. "We seem to be pretty even on paper. They are strong in many events, so we'll have to double up in the events that we're strong in. It all depends on what the young people do when the meet starts."

Francis Howell North has a good opportunity to get many of its athletes through to the next round. Sprinters Tom McFarland and Karnell Matthews are strong in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the sprint relays.

Howell North's other individual standout is hurdler Nathan Woolen, who is recovering from a bout with the flu last week. In the field, Jason Wood is an excellent performer in the shot put and discus.

Francis Howell gave Howell North a good battle in the GAC race last week. Chris Curry had a big meet by winning both hurdles races and finishing third in the high jump. Howell's 4x800 is also strong as is Ken Clark in the open 800. Junior Derek Russell is a good bet to qualify in the distance races. …
