Article excerpt

Ryan Thompson hit his first grand slam and Atlanta left fielder Ryan Klesko botched three consecutive plays that led to three unearned runs as the New York Mets beat the Braves 11-4 Saturday.

The game featured a fifth-inning brawl after Thompson's homer.

Klesko got two errors for his third-inning adventure, which put the Mets ahead 3-0.

Thompson, who had struck out in his five previous at-bats, hit his seventh home run of the year in the fifth for a 7-0 lead off John Smoltz (2-5). Smoltz then hit John Cangelosi on the lower back with the next pitch. Cangelosi charged the mound as the dugouts and bullpens emptied. Both the batter and the pitcher were ejected.

Mauro Gozzo (2-0) stopped Atlanta's winning streak at four, allowing three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Smoltz gave up seven runs - four earned - and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. He is winless in four starts since April 17.

Marlins 6, Cubs 4: Mark Gardner gave up three hits in 6 1/3 innings in his first start of the season, and Kurt Abbott tripled in two runs to lead Florida over Chicago.

Gardner (1-0), making his first start since July 6, 1993, gave up a leadoff homer to Tuffy Rhodes in the first before retiring 15 in a row. Catcher Rick Wilkins ended the Cubs' drought by leading off the sixth with a double.

Gardner, signed as a free agent in the offseason from Kansas City, won his first major-league game since June 5, 1993, against Milwaukee. The win was his first as a starter since Aug. 9, 1992, as a member of the Montreal Expos.

Jeremy Hernandez got the final five outs for his seventh save.

Giants 3, Reds 1: Rookie Salomon Torres broke a personal seven-game winless streak, pitching 6 1/3 strong innings to lead San Francisco over Cincinnati.

Torres (1-2) allowed one run and seven hits for his first victory since Sept. 25, when he beat San Diego. Since then, the righthander had lost four games.

Phillies 3, Pirates 2: Lenny Dykstra scored twice, knocked in two runs, and hit his fourth homer of the season as Philadelphia won its third game in a row over Pittsburgh.

Rockies 4, Astros 2: Andres Galarraga had three hits and drove in two runs, and Colorado beat Houston. The Rockies have won 12 of 15 games against Houston since joining the majors last season. Colorado is 1-1 against the Astros this year.
