BELLEVILLE Doctor Indicted On Drug Charges

Grand jury indictments charging Dr. Carl Burpo, a gynecologist from Belleville, with 260 counts of illegally dispensing drugs were unsealed Thursday in circuit court in Belleville.

Each count accuses Burpo of a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison. They say he illegally dispensed drugs to 14 patients.

Burpo pleaded innocent before Circuit Judge James K. Donovan, who scheduled a hearing for June 20 and released him without requiring that he post bond.

In January, a jury acquitted Burpo of sexually abusing one of his patients. He faces more sex charges, all misdemeanors involving other former patients.

***** BELLEVILLE Burglar Convicted In '90 Slaying

David F. Clark, 30, already serving a prison sentence for burglary, was sentenced Thursday to 80 years in prison for the murder in July 1990 of Ricky Muckensturm, 32, of Granite City.

Clark was convicted on March 2 by a jury in circuit court in Belleville, but has maintained that he is innocent.Jt

Muckensturm's body was found July 10, 1990, near a pig farm outside Brooklyn. He had been shot in the head and his abdomen was cut open. He had been seen leaving a tavern with Clark and John Ashburn, 40, who claimed Muckensturm owed him $37.

Witnesses said Clark later bragged about the killing. Ashburn, also in prison on a weapons conviction, is awaiting trial for the murder.
