Kansas City, Kan., Mayor Is Indicted

Mayor Joe Steineger and two other city officials were indicted Thursday on bribery and other charges, U.S. Attorney Randy Rathbun said.

Steineger and his administrative associate, Peter Adams, were charged with taking bribes from the owner of a topless nightclub in return for political and administrative favors, Rathbun said.

Steineger also faces one count of obstruction of justice. Adams also was indicted on one count of aiding and abetting the obstruction of justice.

Steineger, 60, a Democrat, was first elected mayor of this city of 150,000 in 1987 after a long stint as president of the Turner School Board.

James Eisenbrandt, the mayor's lawyer, issued a statement from Steineger.

"The charges in the indictment are damnable lies by individuals who have been driven out of illegal business activity in the city and have every reason to fabricate stories for their own gain and to seek revenge," Steineger's statement said. "I categorically deny these charges. …
