John Nelson Williams Jr., an executive with AT&T, died Saturday (May 21, 1994) at St. Louis University Hospital from injuries he suffered in an automobile accident. He was 46 and lived in Branchberg, N.J. He was here on business.

Mr. Williams was born and grew up in St. Louis. He graduated in 1966 from Sumner High School, where he was a track star and played football. He earned a bachelor's degree from Washington University and a master's degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

He began his career in the early 1970s in supervisory and managerial posts at the Crane Company and American Car Foundry in St. Louis.

In 1975, he joined Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. here as a management trainee. He later held several managerial positions before the company split with AT&T in 1984. He was transferred to the AT&T New Jersey office in 1987 and was promoted last year to national vice president of global distribution technologies.
