Motorists who used the South Point Prairie Bridge in southern Wentzville won't be crossing that bridge anytime soon.

State highway officials informed the city this week that a temporary repair on the bridge is not possible. The bridge was closed last month after state inspectors determined the bridge was unsafe and ordered it condemned.

In a letter to the engineering firm working on the project, state engineer Pat Martens said the bridge would not be repaired because of plans to build a new bridge.

"Due to the scope of your proposal combined with the city of Wentzville's plan to replace this bridge next year, we feel it is not feasible to pursue this project," Martens wrote to WVP Corp., the St. Louis firm that analyzed how much repair would be needed to reopen the bridge.

Residents who live in the area of the bridge had hoped that a temporary repair could be made so it could be reopened while a new bridge is under construction. But city officials anticipated that repair costs would be high. …
