`Geezer Pleaser' Film Festival Is Held in Chicago

Silver hairs on the silver screen are a rare sight.

Hollywood's term for motion pictures about older folks is "Geezer Pleasers," and the industry generally churns out young people's stories because a majority of the nation's movie audience is under 30.

Now, Terra Nova Films is trying to fill the void, having recently presented the Silver Images Film Festival in Chicago.

"Others have presented more educational-type films for professionals, but we believe this is the first U.S. festival packaging foreign features and independently produced films . . . for both the public and professionals," said Jim Vander Bosch, founder and executive director of Terra Nova.

Margaret Huyck, president of the Older Women's League of Illinois, thinks such events are desperately needed.

"I think it's wonderful what they are doing. Very few films take older people seriously or show them as vital and interesting individuals," said Huyck, whose group champions issues for women over 40. …
