Gomez Keeping Sabo on Bench for Orioles

First, Leo Gomez made an impression on the Baltimore Orioles with his positive attitude. Now, he's showing them what he can do with his bat.

When the Orioles signed free agent third baseman Chris Sabo in January, Gomez suddenly became expendable. Baltimore tried to trade him, but couldn't quite come up with a satisfactory deal.

It's one of the best trades the Orioles never made.

After Sabo went on the disabled list May 9 with a back injury, Gomez stepped into the starting lineup. Sabo is back on the roster, but now he's the one with a view from the bench.

Gomez went two for three with a homer Tuesday night against Detroit, raising his batting average to a team-high .330. Over his last nine games, he was hitting .432 with three homers and 14 RBIs.

"Playing every day, that's what I wanted," Gomez said. "To come to the ballpark every day and see my name in the lineup, I can't be happier. …
