Questions Abound on Vaccines School Officials Meet to Discuss County's Order on Measles Shots

St. Louis County's order that schoolchildren have two doses of measles vaccine by Aug. 30 set off a rash of questions Thursday from public and parochial school officials:

Is enough vaccine available for 50,000 students? (Yes.)

Must transfer students be vaccinated? (Yes.)

Can pregnant girls be vaccinated? (No.)

The school officials queried state and county health workers at a conference hastily called in the wake of the vaccination order Wednesday by County Executive George R. "Buzz" Westfall. The schools are responsible for notifying parents and making sure the children are vaccinated.

More than 200 area residents have come down with measles since April. Most of them are St. Louis County residents.

School officials asked a range of questions at Thursday's conference.

Can a school district give its own vaccinations?

"If you produce the labor, I would think we could produce the juice," responded Michael Williams of the county's communicable disease control services.

Must preschoolers be vaccinated twice? No, only kindergarten through 12th grade.

Can vaccinations be given during summer school? Maybe, but county officials are encouraging parents to take children to their physicians or to free clinics.

When can children be vaccinated for free? Twice this summer, June 18 and Aug. 20. On June 18, the vaccine will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following sites:

Deaconess Medical Center at Oakland and Hampton avenues and Deaconess Medical Center - West Campus at 530 Des Peres Road; Maplewood/Richmond Heights High School, 7539 Manchester Road; St. Luke's Ambulatory Care Center, 725 Belt Avenue in St. Louis; St. John's Mercy Medical Center JFK Clinic, 615 South New Ballas Road; St. Anthony's Medical Center Outpatient Center, 10010 Kennerly Road; and New Northside Baptist Church, 8645 Goodfellow.
