OK for Casino Will Earn Lawyer, Group $5 Million

A lawyer from Kansas City and his associates will collect nearly $6 million if Becker Gaming Inc. successfully opens a riverboat casino in Jefferson City, The Kansas City Star reported Thursday.

Byron Fox, known for representing accused mobsters, heads the group of lobbyists and lawyers that has been promised $5.925 million if the casino is licensed and operates for at least three months.

Fox acknowledged the deal in an interview with The Star last month, saying a lot of effort had been put into the project in the last 18 months.

The money promised by the Las Vegas-based gaming company is for legal work, introductions to government officials and other legwork.

Bruce Becker, president of the gaming firm, said, "It's a pretty good motivator. They have got to make sure I open the (casino) doors."

Becker received the city's endorsement over several other gaming companies to operate a riverboat in Jefferson City, but the state says it plans a close examination of the application. …
