Area Roads, Bridges, Sewer Lines Are Gaining a Friend in Coalition

The St. Louis region has a new advocate for its streets, bridges, waterworks and sewer lines.

The Rebuild St. Louis Coalition includes planners and trade organizations interested in preserving these facilities, said Roger Shields, the group's spokesman. He is city engineer of Sunset Hills and a director and former state president of the American Public Works Association.

The coalition, which has been in the discussion stage for about a year, will make its public debut on June 17, sponsoring a workshop on the region's infrastructure. The session, at 2 p.m. at the Adam's Mark Hotel, is part of the dedication ceremonies for the Melvin Price Lock and Dam.

The region's infrastructure is in generally good shape, Shields said. "But that's not a reason to let it go."

The coalition plans to lobby for projects with local, state and federal officials and work to implement a guide for infrastructure improvements proposed two years ago by Confluence St. Louis, a civic organization. …
