Saturday Drag Race Added to Schedule

Article excerpt

Mid-America Raceways in Wentzville has decided that more is better.

Starting Saturday, Mid-America will hold an 1/8-mile drag-racing program in addition to its regular 1/4-mile drag-racing program on Sundays.

"The 1/8-mile racing seems to be pretty popular and it gives us a chance to have another weekly event," track spokesperson Ann Vehige said. "The racing season is fairly short and this gives people another option. We held an 1/8-mile program a few weeks ago and it worked out pretty well.

"Hopefully, some of the drivers and the fans will be involved in both the Saturday and Sunday programs."

Gates will open at 2:30 p.m. for the 1/8-mile program on Saturdays. Time trials will begin at 3:30 p.m., with eliminations starting at 7 p.m.

The regular 1/4-mile program on Sundays begins with gates opening at 8 a.m. Time trials are at 9 a.m., with eliminations kicking off at 1 p.m.

Last weekend, Mid-America played host to its fourth annual Nostalgia Drag Race and Rod Run Series, feature cars manufactured in 1969 and earlier.

"The nostalgia events are usually our most popular," Vehige said. "The fans love to look at the old cars and the drivers seem to enjoy it, too."

The weekend's events included some exhibition races. In one such race, Rex Stevens drove Dawson's Demon of St. Louis to a speed of 204.60 mph, covering the quarter-mile track in 7.17 seconds.

"We had some real exciting races and the nostalgia car show drew cars from all over the Midwest," Vehige said.
