The St. Charles School Board has approved a $36 million budget for next school year - an increase of $700,00 from the current budget.

Superintendent Mark Keen said Tuesday that the board's decision Monday night had been made because of the growth in assessed valuation and an increase in the amount of money coming in from sales taxes.

As a result, said Keen, "We have eliminated split grade classes at the elementary level, been able to give employees a 4.7 pay increase across the board and are able to provide for some additional teachers at the new Harris School."

At the meeting, the board was told that the district had received the highest accreditation by the Missouri Department of Elementary and State Education.

Claire McCown, supervisor of instruction, said the state report applauded the district for the total number of high-school credits offered, its complete curriculum offering, a strong adult-education program, a high percentage of seniors who are at or above the national average of ACT scores for four years and a high percentage of graduates placed in jobs or continuing education when they leave school. …
