Brinkop, Port Maintain Pace in 3-Day Meet

Article excerpt

Jeanette Brinkop didn't lose an inch in a morning filled with wind and rain Wednesday, but most of the attention was focused on the beating that Meadowbrook Country Club's golf course took from Ellen Port.

Brinkop, 72, shot a 95 in the second round of the St. Louis Women's District Golf Association Three-Day Medal Championship. Her handicap of 25 at Meadowbrook gave her a net score of 70 and enabled her to maintain the 9-stroke lead with which she had started the day. Brinkop carded a net 59 in the opening round Tuesday at Sunset. Her 36-hole net total is 129. Alice Sampson, 67, is in second place at 138.

Women's par at Meadowbrook is 73. Port, one of eight members of the 1994 U.S. Curtis Cup team, shot 71 Wednesday, buttressed by a 4-under 33 on the back side.

"I'll take that any day," Port said.

Her 71 was all the more impressive considering that she set foot on the course for the first time Tuesday.

"That's a great score . . . a sensational score," Meadowbrook professional Mark Morgan said. It set Morgan and his staff scrambling to see if anyone had ever bettered a 71 at the course in competition from the women's tees.

But since there are no records of women's scores at the club, the best Morgan could come up with was a 71 that Nancy Callan, then an employee in the Meadowbrook pro shop, shot in 1986. Callan fired her score from the white tees, a length of 6,600 yards. Port's 71 was from the yellows, a length of 5,672. Lisa Meritt, currently a Meadowbrook assistant, had a 35-34 - 69 last year from the yellows. The difference is that neither Callan nor Meritt recorded her total in a competitive round.

Port is 2-under for the first two days of the tournament. Her gross total of 144 is 14 shots ahead of Mary Gail Dalton and Lisa Minnihan, both at 158. Brinkop's gross is 180. With a handicap of plus-2, Port's net total is 148. …
