Executives Get Expanded Roles at Boatmen's

Boatmen's Bancshares Inc. has promoted two of its top executives in an effort to better manage its rapidly expanding network throughout nine states.

Vice Chairman Samuel B. Hayes III, the former Oklahoma banker who heads Boatmen's biggest bank in St. Louis, has been named president.

In addition, Gregory L. Curl, the executive vice president who has driven Boatmen's expansion into the Southwest during the last four years, has been named vice chairman.

Hayes, 57, gains the title of president from Andrew B. Craig III, who remains Boatmen's chairman and chief executive.

Hayes joined Boatmen's in 1986 from the Bank of Oklahoma, where he had been president.

As president at Boatmen's, Hayes will be responsible for all of Boatmen's banks in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Tennessee.

In his new job, Curl, 45, will continue to oversee Boatmen's acquisitions. However, he will also gain responsibility over Boatmen's banks in Arkansas, Iowa, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Curl "knows all those markets extremely well," Craig said. …
