Woman Protests Residing Next Door to a Drug Den

A Vinita Park woman who lives next to a house that officials describe as a longtime "trouble spot" made an impassioned appeal to the Board of Aldermen this week, saying she is tired of picking up crack vials and beer bottles from her lawn after raucous weekend parties and refuses to raise her three children in that environment.

"You can't even send your kids outside," said the 38-year-old seamstress, who lives on Penfield Avenue and asked that her name be withheld. "I want my block to be like your blocks. I shouldn't have to take this type of abuse."

The woman urged the board to adopt a proposal, drawn up early this year by the police and public works departments, to block off one end of the street with a guardrail, thereby limiting access to "the party house."

Aldermen promised quick action. "The lady's waited long enough," said Alderman Robert Gore, 2nd Ward, who also has received complaints from another Penfield Avenue resident and tenants of a nearby apartment complex on Home Avenue. …
