Framing is best done with a helper. However, if you're working on a large building project all by yourself, here are some suggestions to help you along:

Sometimes when installing a joist or another large framing piece, you can nail in a scrap to hold up one end while you fasten the other. Make sure to drive the nails only part of the way into the scrap, so they can be removed easily when you are finished with it.

To nail two pieces of lumber together at right angles, set the wood on the ground the way you want them to be and nail a scrap of wood diagonally across the pieces to help steady them. Use a square to help you get it right, and then check it before doing the final nailing.

Another way to help steady lumber is to nail a scrap of wood about a foot long along the side of the lumber to be joined so that it will stand up on the ground by itself. …
