Monday was GEORGE VAN HALTREN Day here on the upper reaches of Page 2. Some - not many, I'm guessing - may remember Van Haltren as an accomplished outfielder in the bigs from 1887-1904. He batted .317 in 17 major-league seasons.

But frustrated ball coaches who chew water bottles and swallow jawbreakers watching their youngsters search for home plate might not know about Van Haltren.

Before switching to the outfield, Van Haltren came up to the Cubs in 1887 as a pitcher. On June 27 he set a major-league record by walking 16 men in one game - thus pioneering the way for every 10-year-old pitcher who ever toes the rubber.
