Newton Claims Impressive Triple in Canoe-Kayaking

Peter Newton of Honolulu, one of the top medal hopefuls for the United States at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, proved himself worthy of those expectations by winning three gold medals as flatwater sprint canoe and kayak racing closed Sunday at Lake Saint Louis.

Newton prevailed in the men's single and double kayak 500 meters and the four-man kayak 1,000 meters. In the single, he posted a time of 1 minute 48.61 seconds, outdistancing the 1:49.83 of fellow Olympian Mike Herbert of Rogers, Ark.

Newton teamed with Michael Harbold of Honolulu, to earn the gold in the double with a 1:39.69, then came back with Harbold and two other South teammates, Patrick Hemmens, Costa Mesa, Calif.; and Patrick Richardson, La Jolla, Calif., for the win in the fours with a time of 3:13.14.

Liz Johnson of Niagara Falls, N.Y. won her second Festival gold in as many days when she teamed with Mandy Wilson of Dayton, Ohio, to win the women's doubles event at Tropicana Lanes. St. Louis resident Lisa Rothe teamed with Lisa Vint of East Troy, Wis. (North) to win the bronze medal. Floridians Mike Nyitray of Miami and Eric Cox of Gainesville won the men's gold medal.

Ania Bleszinski topped St. Louisan Laura Guignon 6-2, 6-2 to reach today's 11 a.m. singles semifinal vs. Laura Berendt of Tampa, Fla. Bleszinski has yet to lose more than three games in a set.

***** SHOOTING West Shooter Takes Gold

Peter Durben of St. Paul, Minn., won his first-ever medal, capturing the gold in the men's three-position rifle event with a score of 1254.9. A member of the West team, Durben, 28, has been competing since he was 9. The North swept the medals in women's 10-meter air rifle. Denise Loring (Columbus, Ga.) led the way, winning the gold with 492. …
