Library Set to Close on Land Deal for Expansion of Parkway Branch

Article excerpt

After more than 18 months of negotiating for land to expand the Corporate Parkway branch, officials with the St. Charles City-County Library District soon will close on a purchase contract.

GTE officials signed the contract earlier this month. GTE owns the property, which lies between a GTE building and the Corporate Parkway branch in Wentzville. The library district owns land immediately behind Corporate Parkway, but officials sought an additional strip of land owned by GTE to expand the branch.

Closing is planned for July 31.

The contract calls for the library district to pay $5,868 for 2,934 square feet of land. Library district officials cleared the last hurdle by retaining a second survey of the land. Library district officials said they did not want to interfere with a parking lot owned by GTE.

"I'm happy we've finally settled this," said Carl Sandstedt, library district director. "I'm sorry it took so long. These people deserve a bigger and better building and now they will have it."

Sandstedt said the district had purchased land to the side of the building to expand parking. When the expansion is complete, the building will be larger than the Kisker Road branch.

Final design plans are nearly complete for the expansion, says Maggie Preiss, a spokeswoman for the district. The building will be expanded to nearly 12,000 square feet from its current size of about 7,200 square feet. Officials hope to seeks bids on the project within the next two weeks. …
