Athletes Making Big Pitch for Libraries Venture Stores Sponsoring Event Designed to Promote Reading to Children

Venture Stores, Inc., is going to bat for the American Library Association (ALA).

Venture, which has offices in O'Fallon, has put together an all-star team of athletes to support the association. The Venture Library League is a combination of sports superstars whose strong appeal among youths will enable the superstars to raise children's awareness of the importance of reading and using their public and school libraries.

Members of the Venture Library League include Ozzie Smith, Brett Hull, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Bonnie Blair, Alvin Harper, Nick Lowery, Warren Moon and Ryne Sandberg. Maria Sansone, 13, a sportscaster from ABC, will serve as the spokeswoman.

"The library isn't just a place where you get books that you have to read; it's a place to get books you like to read," said Sansone, who is believed to be the youngest sports reporter in the history of network television. "The library has books on everyone's favorite subjects, whether it's basketball, astronomy or Mozart."

This is the fourth year Venture has worked with the association to help youths in its markets understand the value of libraries. …
