Ortwerth Takes Lead in Fund Raising Has Collected 17 Percent More Than Gop Rival
State Rep. Joe Ortwerth has raised more than $48,000 to finance his campaign for St. Charles County Executive, collecting 17 percent more money than his chief Republican rival, St. Peters Mayor Tom Brown.
Ortwerth, R-St. Peters, has raised more than $20,100 since June 20 according to campaign finance reports filed Tuesday with the county clerk. Brown has raised more than $16,800 during the same period.
The two Republicans individually have nearly twice as much money as the three Democratic candidates combined. County Executive Eugene Schwendemann, has raised more than $18,000 to retain his office in the Aug. 2 Democratic primary.
Schwendemann is being opposed by County Auditor James Hodges, who has raised $3,240, and County Councilman Bob Fisher, D-1st District, who has collected $1,168.
Other incumbent Democrats also are doing better than their challengers in fund raising. County Prosecutor Timothy has raised more than $21,600 - nearly a third more than challenger Joe Green, who has raised $14,368. And Sheriff Raymond Runyon has raised nearly $12,990 for his primary battle with Jim Gray.
Gray's finance report was not available when a reporter reviewed the most recent reports filed with the county clerk.
The finance reports for Ortwerth and Brown reveal several instances of businesses contributing to both campaigns. Zeisler Motors of St. Peters donated $500 to Brown and $300 to Ortwerth; Pickett Ray & Silver, an engineering company in St. Peters, contributed $520 to Ortwerth and $350 to Brown; Soil Consultants Inc. of St. Peters contributed more than $400 to both campaigns; and Robert Kaplan and Kaplan Real Estate Co. contributed more than $1,500 to both campaigns.
Ortwerth also garnered more than $4,100 from the Baue Funeral Home of St. Charles, most of that in advertising contributions. He also reported raising more than $5,000 during the past month from donors giving less than $100 and raised another $3,600 through fund-raising events. …
