The Arizona Cardinals lost two safeties to injury in practice Thursday morning, so coach and general manager Buddy Ryan quickly signed another of his former players.

Andre Waters, an 11-year veteran, had a foot problem, and the Philadelphia Eagles did not offer him a contract this year. He becomes the sixth former Eagle - fourth on the defense - to reunite in Arizona with Ryan, who coached Philadelphia from 1986 through 1990.

"You know what kind of player he is," Ryan said. "Takes no prisoners."

Ryan said he talked to Waters between practices Thursday and told him to be at training camp today.

In the morning practice, Terry Hoage twisted his right knee, and Brent Alexander sprained his left foot. The team had no immediate information on either injury. Oilers: The parents of Houston offensive lineman Stan Thomas are being sent to prison on tax charges, leaving Thomas to care for his teen-age brother and sister, the player said.

"The last couple of days have been the most tragic of my life," said Thomas, who took two days off from training camp to return home to see his parents, his brother Robert, 14, and sister Candy, 13.

His parents, Elizabeth and Stan Thomas Sr. of El Centro, Calif., pleaded guilty to bilking the government in a series of tax and fraud schemes that prosecutors estimate cost the government $300,000.

They are scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 12.

Thomas says he spent more than $100,000 on attorneys' fees to help his parents. He had a contract for $500,000 with the Oilers, but he was waived and re-signed at the $162,000 minimum with a incentive bonuses.

Cowboys: Wide receiver Alvin Harper suffered another injury to his tender right shoulder in practice Thursday and mighty be unavailable for the Cowboys' exhibition game against the Minnesota Vikings Sunday night.

Harper caught a pass and fell on the shoulder with cornerback Dave Thomas holding on.

Eagles: Free-agent linebacker Jock Jones suffered a sprained right ankle tackling Herschel Walker in a coverage drill. …
