At long last, singer WILLIE NELSON has squared away his account with the Internal Revenue Service.

After years of negotiation, Nelson and the agency agreed this week that the $16.7 million Nelson has paid will put him back in good graces.

At one time, the bill ballooned to $32 million.

"We signed all the papers, so everything is back to even again," Nelson told the Nashville Tennessean. He recalled how his troubles began 14 years ago: "I was somewhere in Boston one night, and these two guys came up, flipped their badges and said, `We're with the IRS.'"

In Fort Pierce, Fla., actor WESLEY SNIPES has settled up with the law for a 120-mph jaunt on his motorcycle in April. He pleaded no contest this week to reckless driving and will pay $7,100 in fines. Snipes' excuse: He knew he was speeding but didn't realize police were chasing him - for 30 miles.

Actress PATRICIA RICHARDSON of "Home Improvement" is up for an Emmy this year as best actress in comedy series. And if she fails to win - well, she'll get her hands on an Emmy or two anyway.

Richardson will be co-host of the awards ceremony, to be held Sept. 11. She will share the lectern with ELLEN DeGENERES of "Ellen."
