The Kansas City Royals extended baseball's longest winning streak this season to 12 games Wednesday night with a 9-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Bob Hamelin broke Bo Jackson's club rookie record with his 23rd homer for the Royals, whose only longer winning streak was a 16-game run in 1977.

Yankees 2, Brewers 1: Sterling Hitchcock (4-1) pitched a five-hitter over seven innings, and Jim Leyritz and Randy Velarde each hit home runs as New York won its sixth in a row. After a rain delay in the eighth inning, the game was called. Rangers 11, White Sox 8: Texas' Jose Canseco homered twice and Rusty Greer brought in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Frank Thomas hit his 37th homer for Chicago. Twins 4, Orioles 3: Scott Leius capped a two-run rally in the ninth with a two-out RBI single against Lee Smith, snapping Minnesota's losing streak at six. The blown save was the sixth in 38 opportunities for Smith.

Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 2: Tom Brunansky's two-run homer capped a six-run fifth and Tim VanEgmond (2-3) pitched 7 1/3 innings for his second major-league win. Tim Naehring had three RBIs for Boston. Mariners 8, Angels 4: Jay Buhner and Edgar Martinez each homered for the second successive game and Ken Griffey Jr. drove in three runs to lead Seattle past California.

Indians 7, Tigers 4: Aided by an error by pitcher Tim Belcher, Cleveland scored four runs in the fourth. …
