Hunter Education Day Moves to Antire Valley

Article excerpt

A new location and new classes will be features of the eighth Post-Dispatch Hunter Education Day Sept. 24.

What may be the country's largest hunter education program, co-sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation, will be held at the Antire Valley County Park range, just off Interstate 44 in southwest St. Louis County.

The event was moved from its long-time location, the range at the Busch Conservation Area in St. Charles County, to make it more accessible to more area residents. It was to have been held at the new Forest 44 Range, but bad weather has delayed construction there.

Last year the event was held at Francis Howell High School on Sunday, a date late, because a downpour chased everybody out of the Busch Area. Some 1,200 people had registered and only 544 showed up.

In the event of rain this year the classes won't be postponed. They will will be moved to Eureka Senior High School, on Missouri Route 109 just north of I-44 in Eureka. If the weather is wet the morning of Sept. 24 a decision on the move will be announced on KMOX-AM between 6:30 and 7 a.m.

In Missouri, anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1967, is required to have a hunter safety certificate to buy any kind of hunting license. To get a certificate, good for life, a person must take 10 hours of instruction and then pass a 25-question test.

Participants will attend eight hours of classes on Sept. 24 and two hours of evening class at five locations around the county the next week. Tests will be given at the end of the two-hour sessions. Sign-up for the evening classes will be at the end of the last class Saturday.

The state's hunter safety curriculum has been upgraded for this year and is more pertinent and demanding. The class subjects: 1 - Firearms Use and Hunting Accidents; 2 and 3 - Firearms and Ammunition (parts 1 and 2); 4 - Hunting Traditions and Ethics; 5 - The Hunter and Conservation; 6 - State Hunting Practices; 8 - Hunting Responsibility, and 9 - Rifle shooting. …
