Bears' 16-0 Victory Irks Big Red's Ryan

Article excerpt

Buddy Ryan spent several years building up the Chicago Bears defense. Now that he's on the other side, they still look pretty good to him.

"The Bears are a good defensive football team, but that's no excuse for not scoring on them," Ryan said after his Arizona Cardinals were beaten 16-0 by Chicago in a National Football League preseason game Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.

"You can pay your team to play but for them to excel it has to come from the heart. There wasn't a lot of heart out there tonight."

Ryan, whose defensive schemes helped the Bears win the Super Bowl in 1986, was coaching his second NFL preseason game for the Cardinals. He was happier with the first, a 17-7 victory over San Francisco last week.

Ryan's "46 Defense" came up empty-handed after getting six sacks and scoring a touchdown off an interception in the win over San Francisco.

"To me it's unbelievable that we played 30 minutes of defensive football and did not get one turnover," Ryan said. "We had one sack, a couple of opportunity for picks . . . but that was it. You can't win in the National Football League if you don't get turnovers."

Instead, Arizona turned the ball over and the Bears converted some of their scoring chances. They got three first-half field goals from Kevin Butler and a 34-yard scoring run from Robert Green with 10 minutes 41 seconds left.

The Cardinals committed 15 penalties for 100 yards to seven on 55 yards for Chicago.

Green shined after being used mainly on special teams.

"This was definitely what I was waiting for," the fourth-year pro said. "It was good to just get in there and do what I'm used to doing."

The Bears (2-0) also got help from two pass-interference penalties against Cardinals cornerback James Williams and two interceptions by Bears corner Donnell Woolford.

"Any time you can get them and hold them you've got to be happy about that," Woolford said. …
