Change Unlikely in Nfc Coverage

Article excerpt

The networks have changed. The philosophy has not.

The National Football League spurned a 38-year relationship with CBS, taking a bid of $1.586 billion and running with the fledgling Fox Network. That means that the NFL's National Football Conference package moves locally to KDNL from KMOV.

But Channel 30 general manager Gregg Filandrinos doesn't plan to vary significantly from the approach employed by Channel 4 management in the last few years - he will try to show the best games available.

Because St. Louis isn't an NFL city, the local stations are not obligated to carry any one team, although KMOV stuck with the Cardinals for years. The Big Red's first 42 regular-season games after they abandoned St. Louis for Phoenix were televised in the St. Louis market, and ratings were phenomenal. The Cardinals consistently walloped other, seemingly more attractive, games.

But the Big Red continued to flounder on the field, and the love affair in the ratings eventually faded. KMOV relented in recent seasons, picking up the Chicago Bears or adopting "the best game available" credo, or both, meaning a lot of Dallas Cowboys contests were shown, too.

KDNL would be able to carry only two Kansas City games. Fox has the rights to Sunday afternoon games when an NFC team is on the road, a situation affecting Kansas City only on Sept. 11 (when San Francisco plays at Arrowhead Stadium) and on Sept. 24 (when the Los Angeles Rams come to town).

Most Chiefs games will be on NBC's KSDK (Channel 5), because NBC has the Sunday afternoon games when American Football Conference clubs are on the road - the case with Kansas City most of the season. …
