In this case, no news wasn't good news. The 10th international conference on AIDS in Yokohama, Japan, revealed no exciting breakthroughs in a cure or treatment for this fatal disease. Neither, sadly, could the conference report any slowdown in the spread of HIV infection. If anything, the most enthusiasm conference participants could muster was for the incremental and painstaking steps being made in basic research. Little hope was - or could be - offered to people with AIDS.

The gloomiest news was delivered by Dr. James Curran of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control: "We are only at the beginning of the HIV epidemic in the world." The disease has ravaged and continues to ravage Africa, but the center of the epidemic appears to be shifting to Asia. Indeed, one reason the conference was held in Japan was to draw attention to the disease's spread to Asia.

As AIDS becomes endemic to Africa and skyrockets in Asia, researchers have discovered a variety of cultural impediments stopping the spread of HIV infection. …
