Wind up the summer with some learning fun to stimulate your kids' minds as they gear up for the classroom. Here's something for every age group to tackle!

Ages 4 and up

While waiting for a back-to-school checkup at the dentist's or pediatrician's office, use your finger to "draw" a numeral on your child's back. Challenge your child to guess the numeral. Let your child draw on your back, too. At the beach or in the back-yard sandbox, draw numerals in the sand, then gather the correct number of shells or sticks to match the numeral. Line the items up and count them together.

Sort and fold clean laundry together. Guess how many pairs of socks are in the sock pile, towels in the towel pile, etc., then count aloud the actual number of items you have sorted.

10 and up

Prepare a meal together from start to finish. Let your child read the recipe aloud, then list the supplies you need to purchase. Clip coupons to the list if you have them; shop, measure and cook the ingredients, set the table and serve. …
