Edwardsville Teachers Vote to Strike over Pay

Teachers in Edwardsville went out on strike early today, after the school board refused to go to binding arbitration on salaries. The vote was 256-12.

Classes in the district had been scheduled to start today. But Jon Davis, the president of the teachers union, said late Wednesday that teachers would not show up for work.

"We are the lowest paid teachers in the area," Davis said. "We will be out until we get an agreement."

He added that the board recently received a significant amount of money and that teachers believed they should get part of it.

More than 380 teachers attended the meeting Wednesday night. It was at the American Legion Hall in Edwardsville.

The teachers rejected the School Board's salary offer, and asked for binding arbitration. The teachers wanted a 6 percent pay increase for each of the next two years. The vote on the salary offer was 283-8.

Then board members, meeting by telephone, rejected the request for arbitration. The teachers then struck at midnight. …
